This last ad seems is the epitome of "Killing Us Softly" in my opinion. What is meant to be an ad for selling a purse shows up as an ad of an unhealthy woman obsessed with her body image. This pose, done by so many models, seems to say, "I can make myself skinnier. I promise. I'll try!". Her back is curved and with her hand on her hip, her collar bone protrudes more than it normally would. She is intentionally sticking her neck out for it to appear longer and thinner. It is because of images like this that women have an unhealthy obsession with wanting to be skinnier.
Instead of focusing on the beauty of the purse, you end up focusing on how thin this model is. You start thinking it is normal and that you should look like that.
I will tell you wholeheartedly that you are wrong if those are the thoughts
coming in to your mind. Your worth does not depend on the clothes you buy, the way you smell, or the men that seem to attach to your arm. You are worth so much more that materialistic things.
This picture is the perfect conclusion of the message I have tried to make today. Women are not objects, they are subjects. When I think of what it means to be to be a woman, I think of strength and confidence within myself. I don't think of an outward appearance and how I need to look more like society to fit in. I want to teach my daughter of the worth she was born with and the worth she can continue to hold onto throughout her whole life.
